چکیده

The bushy nature of the human evolutionary tree in the past 3 million years is widely accepted. Yet, a spectacular new fossil of early Homo has prompted some paleoanthropologists to prune our family tree.

3D Morphometric Study of the Mandibular Fossa and Its Implication for Species Recognition in Homo erectus

The problem of species recognition in paleoanthropology has been the subject of numerous studies. In the current study, we have used the complex topography of the mandibular fossa to assess its potential as a species-specific indicator. Six landmarks were registered using a microscribe 3Dx digitizer on four extant species: Pan paniscus, Pan troglodytes, Gorilla gorilla, and two ethnical groups ...

Homo erectus Infancy and Childhood The Turning Point in the Evolution of Behavioral Development in Hominids

The evolution of hominid behavioral ontogeny can be reconstructed using two lines of evidence: first, comparative neontological data on the behavior and development of living hominoid species (humans and the great apes), and second, comparative paleontological and archaeological evidence associated with fossil hominids. (Although behavior rarely fossilizes, it can leave significant traces.)1 In...

The Atapuerca Sites and Their Contribution to the Knowledge of Human Evolution in Europe

Since the late 1980s, paleoanthropology has witnessed a paradigm shift in interpretation of the evolution of the genusHomo.1 The anagenetic evolutionary model, which postulate an unbroken lineal temporal succession of the reproductive continuity of Homo habilis, Homo erectus, and Homo sapiens, representing three evolutionary grades, is gradually being replaced by the cladogenetic model of speci...

A female Homo erectus pelvis from Gona, Ethiopia.

Analyses of the KNM-WT 15000 Homo erectus juvenile male partial skeleton from Kenya concluded that this species had a tall thin body shape due to specialized locomotor and climatic adaptations. Moreover, it was concluded that H. erectus pelves were obstetrically restricted to birthing a small-brained altricial neonate. Here we describe a nearly complete early Pleistocene adult female H. erectus...
